Basic Negation
The character 不 (bù) is the most common negation word in Mandarin Chinese. It is used to negate verbs and adjectives in the present and future tense. For example, 不喜欢 means "do not like," and 不下雨 means "will not rain." It is placed directly before the verb or adjective it negates.
Advanced Usage and Patterns
不 also appears in fixed expressions and compound words. Forably, 不但...还... means "not only... but also..." which is used to connect two positive statements with emphasis. Additionally, 不 can negate nouns in sentences like 他不是老师 (He is not a teacher). Understanding these patterns helps learners use 不 naturally in conversation.
